Head is one of the most important part in the human body. In it there are many organs - organs that can set the human life, as an example the brain.
Head of the skull bones have a thick and hard to help protect the brain. But even if the helmet has a natural, the brain is very sensitive to different types of injury (Anonymous, 2005).
Gen. head injury is very often at this time, where almost every 15 seconds can occur a head injury and death due to head injury every 12 minutes (Suyadi, 2006).
Head injury has caused death and disability at the age of less than 50 years, and shoot at the head injury is the number 2 cause of death at the age under 35 years old. And almost half of patients who have experienced head injury died (Anonymous, 2005).
Brain can be injured even though there is a wound that does not penetrate the skull. Various injuries can be caused by a sudden acceleration that allows the occurrence of impact or sudden deceleration due to the strike occurred when the object is not moving. Brain damage can occur at any point and the impact on the opposite side.
acceleration-deceleration injury sometimes called coup-contrecoup (French language for the hit-counterhit) (Anonymous, 2005).
The weight of the head injury may tear, or crush the nerve, blood vessel and tissue in or around the brain. Damage can also occur in the nerve pathways, bleeding or severe swelling (Anonymous, 2005).
Bleeding, swelling and hoarding fluid (edema) has the same effect caused by the growth in the mass
skull. Because the skull can not grow wide, then the increased pressure can damage or destroy the brain network.
Because of its position in the skull, the pressure tends to push down to the brain. The brain can be pushed up into the hole that connects the brain with the brain stem, this condition is called herniasi (Anonymous, 2005).
Herniasi similar kind can encourage the brain and brain stem through the hole in the bottom of the skull (foramen magnum) into medulla spinalis. Herniasi this can result in fatal because the brain stem controls the vital functions (heart rate and respiration) (Anonymous, 2005).
Head injury which can sometimes seem to cause mild brain damage is great. Old age and those who consume anticoagulant (medicine to prevent blood coagulation), is very sensitive to the occurrence of bleeding around the brain (Anonymous, 2005).
Often cause brain damage within the deviation function, which varies depending on the damages that occur, whether limited or more spread out (diffuse). Deviation function that occur also depends on the brain which is affected. Localise symptoms can be a change in movement, sensation, speech, vision and hearing. Aberration function of the brain that can affect retention diffuse and pattern of sleep, and can cause confusion and coma (Anonymous, 2005).
Occurrence of some head injuries, one that often happens is epidural bleeding (epidural hemorrhage / epidural hematoma). Hematoma epidural derived from arterial bleeding in which is located between the protective layer of the brain (meningens) skull and bones. This occurs because the skull fracture or trauma arterial tear that has been in the area.
As explained previously, if the bleeding is not immediately in the room can not be the skull area, the impact may cause permanent damage.
